A fibular notch approach for the treatment of ankle fractures involving the distal tibial plafond

Abstract Background Although efficacy is related to many factors, the surgical approach one of most important intervention factors for complex ankle fractures. Ankle fractures involving distal tibial plafond frequently present a challenge in choosing which incisions will be best treatment. Here, we an innovative fibular notch treatment some specific and series patients with either functional or radiographic outcomes. Methods Twenty-two concomitant tibiofibular syndesmosis injuries were treated through this retrospective study. The details technique reviewed from operative notes. Relevant data medical records. quality reduction was examined using CT scans, lateral stability assessed by physical examination stress radiographs. American Orthopedic Foot Society Ankle-Hindfoot Scale (AOFAS) score implemented clinical assessment. Results All surgeries successfully performed via as primary excellent intraoperative visualization. Postoperative radiography revealed satisfying restoration all syndesmosis. healed average time 17.3 ± 3.6 weeks. Mild posttraumatic osteoarthritis (PTOA) 4 patients. AOFAS 88.8 at last follow-up. Conclusions safe reliable plafond. This provides direct visualization fragments articular surface without significantly increasing iatrogenic injuries. Satisfactory results observed, further anatomical studies are recommended ascertain feasibility
